Deploying activities assessing the situation of violence in the workplace for public health workers in Thanh Hoa province

On 14/3/2016, union officials and researchers of the Health Strategy and Policy Institute and Vietnam National Union of Health Workers has continued to deploy activities to assess the situation of violence at some health facilities in Thanh Hoa province in the framework of research projects in collaboration between the Institute, Vietnam National Union of Health Workers and the Department of Personnel and Organisation, the Ministry of Health.

The working groups have had conversations and discussions with representatives of agencies and a number of provincial health facilities such as the Department of Health, Department of Public Security, the Department of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs, Confederation of Trade Unions of Thanh Hoa province, Thieu Hoa district, Sam Son Town and 6 provincial and district hospitals in the province (Provincial General hospital, Psychiatric Hospital, Thieu Hoa General Hospital and Sam Son General Hospital ). The working groups also have direct discussions with the patient and patients' relatives are using medical services in hospitals.

The working groups exchanged views on the situation of violence at the premises of public health care services and the impact of this problem to the health facility; identify the causes and factors involved, as well as the difficulties and advantages in responding to this situation by the medical establishment and governments at all levels; and also propose solutions to prevent violence for health workers in the workplace.

The information shows that, similar to many other provinces across the country, violence in the workplace for medical staff in Thanh Hoa has rapidly increased the number of cases and severity of the incident in recent years and has made a huge impact to the health facilities in the province. The cause of this condition has also been recognized, analyzed from many angles; solutions were also discussed to mitigate this situation in the health facilities, to ensure the security, safety and equity in health service provision.

In the coming time, the team continues to be deployed to collect information in the provinces of Dien Bien, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho and public health facilities at the central level as planned.
